For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Phew! Another successful Epiphany Vacation Bible School is in the books. It was a busy week of joy and laughter, singing, crafts, games, snacks, friendship, learning, and the sharing of God’s love in Jesus Christ. It was a week where young and not so very young came together with one purpose: to grow in the grace and knowledge of the love of God that we have in Christ Jesus. It was great fun. It was also exhausting! And, yes, there were tears. Mommies and Daddies were missed. Things inevitably did not go exactly as planned. Here and there things got tense. What we thought would work, didn’t. But then again what we thought wouldn’t work, somehow did. I think all involved learned new installments of the lesson that if we do our best, God will honor our efforts by showing up and doing what God does best: using broken vessels to spread the message that God loves each one of us with an unconditional, self-sacrificing love that truly is one of a kind.
That is a message that our kids need to hear. That is a message that we all need to hear. And hear again. And again and again and again. And then again. We need to hear it when we feel left out, when we feel different, when we feel confused, when we realize that we have done something wrong, when we feel afraid. Whenever we feel anxious, whenever peace, in our world or in our lives, seems illusive. Remember that Jesus loves you.
Jesus loves you. It’s not just a catchy phrase for children in VBS, a nice platitude to shout joyfully for a week and then fade away like a pleasant dream. No. Jesus loves you. Really! I’m not kidding. I’m not just saying it, its really true. Jesus loves you. Deeply. Truly. Unconditionally. And eternally. There is nothing you can do to make him love you more. There is nothing you can do to make him love you less. Whatever unsettling situation you find yourself in, or will ever find yourself in, Jesus came to redeem… because he loves you that much. And nothing and nobody can change that. Not even you! I don’t know about you, but I take tremendous comfort in that. “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” A truth that is so simple and yet so profound. Thank you Jesus!
